(THE COMFY SOFA, My House, Annapolis, Maryland) January 21, 2015—It has come to my attention that today is National Squirrel Day and while I believe that National Cat Day is far superior, I am forced to admit that there are reasons for me to celebrate today.
1. The Dog. Squirrels drive him crazy and it’s so entertaining to see him lose his mind over a small furry rodent. Sometimes I feel bad for him. Almost.
2. Athleticism. Let’s be honest, cats are the best athletes – the cheetah, though slightly bigger than myself, can run up to 40mph. Impressive. Though I have to give credit where it is due, those squirrels are quite the pros. Going up trees, getting into the bird feeder, climbing the fence – all great feats that annoy both the dog and the humans.
3. Entertainment. Watching squirrels and their ensuing shenanigans is ah-mazing and better than any of that stuff my humans watch (precisely why I try to block it out, I have standards). Sitting in the window for hours watching them is the only way to go!
So on this, National Squirrel Day, I ask that all humans bestow upon their cat the enrichment that squirrel watching can bring. Ensure that my fellow felines are given ample opportunities to be active and engaged. Give them places to hide, explore, and opportunities to exercise their inner hunter.
